You have until this Sunday to sign up for Hennepin County’s Zero Waste Challenge.
The county will select 50 households to take the eight-month challenge. County staff will customize ways a household can reduce trash. Participants will be asked to weigh their waste for before the program starts and toward the end to determine progress.
“It’s going to either to a waste energy facility or landfill and that all costs money,” said Carolyn Collopy, master recycler and composter program coordinator with Hennepin County. “When it’s going to a landfill, it’s there forever. It’s something that we residents of Minnesota are going to pay to manage forever and it could potentially be a threat to our groundwater.”
County officials say in the last two years the program helped reduce waste by nearly 30 percent.
